Michael Foss

Michael Foss was born in 1945 in Salem, MA. His family traveled to Japan shortly after Michael was born, as his father, Vernon Foss, was in the Navy during World War II. After Japan, his father was sent to California where Michael attended high school. Eventually, the family settled back on the East Coast in Lynn, Massachusetts. It was in Newburyport where he met his wife, Robin Hughes. They lived in the Newburyport area for most of their 46 years together.

Michael loved the outdoors and felt lucky to work on the grounds crew of Northern Essex Community College for 25+ years. He brought his love for fishing and surfing back with him from the West Coast, although he often complained the waves were “never as high” as they were in California.

As an avid NASCAR fan, one of the highlights of Michael’s life was meeting Dale Earnhardt and his family in the lobby of the hotel where he and Robin were staying! On any NASCAR Sunday race day, he was in front of the television, rooting the drivers on. Michael loved history and the History Channel, as well as any TV show with obscure science facts. He could always be counted on to recount stories, and even some tall tales, at family gatherings.

Michael’s big smile and warm heart will be missed by his friends and family. Besides his wife Robin, he leaves behind his sisters, Colleen (Zora) from Lynn, Massachusetts; June (Irv) from Las Cruces, New Mexico; and Velvet from Atlanta, Georgia. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. Michael was predeceased by his brother Joe (Sharal).
