Donald Peterson Obituary

Donald Peterson, 76, of Merrimac, MA, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, May 31st. Born in Amesbury, MA, on November 15, 1948, he was the beloved son of the late Eric Peterson and Blanche Picard, and the devoted twin brother of the late Donna Ackroyd, who passed away last year.

Donald is survived by his wife, Doreen, and his two sons, Jesse Peterson, 49, of Boston (and his partner, Jennifer Bale), and Ben Peterson, 48, of Salt Lake City, Utah (and his wife, Meredith Peterson). He also leaves behind numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and countless fond memories. Most of all, he was the proud and adoring grandfather of Max and Charlie Peterson - the absolute lights of his life.

A graduate of Amesbury High School’s Class of 1966, Donald served as class president and was a standout athlete in both football and baseball. After attending Northeastern University, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served bravely as a Specialist 4 in the 3rd Battalion, 6th Artillery during the Vietnam War. For his courage, he was awarded both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart on May 11, 1969. Following his distinguished military service, Donald worked for over 30 years as a package driver for United Parcel Service, earning the respect of colleagues, customers - and many neighborhood dogs -  with his tireless work ethic, dependability and genuine kindness.

Donald was, above all, a devoted father. He was a constant presence in the stands at every one of his sons’ baseball games, from Little League through high school. He instilled in Jesse and Ben his unwavering values, his love for Boston sports, and the importance of doing things the right way.
A passionate & lifelong fan, Donald took immense joy in the championships brought home by the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins over the past two decades, celebrating each with pride and enthusiasm.

In his well-deserved retirement, Donald found joy in the simple rhythms of life: enjoying his morning Dunkin' iced coffee while reading the Boston Globe, USA Today & listening to 92.5 the River, tending to his lawn & garden, birdwatching, beach days and — most of all — time spent with his grandsons.

Donald lived a life defined by quiet strength, love, humility and devotion to those he cared for. He will be missed more than words can express.

A celebration of Donald's life will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald’s honor to the National Audubon Society or MSPCA-Angell
