David Philip Picard (Pencil) passed away with his family by his side on February 8, 2026, after a short illness. He was born on January 12, 1949, in Amesbury MA, the son of Leo and Mary Picard of Amesbury and Plum Island.
Pencil devoted his life to serving others as a firefighter and EMT in Amesbury, a career he loved and was deeply proud of. His career was not just a job, it was his calling and a central part of who he was. He was especially proud of the two babies he delivered during his career, a story he never tired of telling.
Outside of work, Pencil lived life fully and on his own terms. He loved the water, whether cruising the Merrimack River on a beautiful summer day with friends and family or scuba diving for lobster. He would give anyone the shirt off his back and was always there when it mattered. Proud, independent and full of character, he was hard to forget. Almost everyone has a 'Pencil' story, one of those moments that makes you smile, laugh or shake your head, and reminds you why he was so special.
He was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter, Nicole Lynn Picard.
He is survived by his children, Joseph Picard of Fremont, NH, and Karen Picard (Dwayne Hammond) of Raymond, NH; his grandson, Colby Picard of Fremont, NH; his great-grandson, Caden Picard; his brothers, John Picard (Beverly) and Robert Picard; his chosen family, Susan Lasch and Anton Luckenbach, all of Amesbury; and his former wife, Linda Picard of Fremont, NH.
Calling hours for "Pencil" will be held this Monday from 4-7 pm at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home 118 Friend St. in Amesbury. Burial will be in the Spring.
